The Wholistic World Vision

Annual Charitable Appeal

WWV first became involved in charitable support for Sri Lanka at the time of the devastating 2004 Tsunami, which claimed some 40,000 lives. Our early work was in association with the inspirational local Sarvodaya organisation - a long established social support network with outlets islandwide that was the first to get aid into the worst affected areas.

Since then WWV extended connections to other respected local groups and step by step we have been ever more involved in grassroots projects benefitting the struggling “underclass” on the island. Food was not the priority in the early stages, because the island is abundant and fertile and (if properly managed!) largely self-sustaining. However, after the horrific Easter 2019 terrorist attack followed by Covid and then national bankruptcy, the priorities have changed since it is estimated that at least 50% of the population is now either in or near poverty. We now run regular food support (dry rations) programs relying on dedicated locals to identify those most in need within their communities. We also donate stationery and basic educational materials for rural schools as well as promoting health education programs (especially nutrition) to combat the epidemic of diabetes and obesity among children. Among other activities have been refurbishment of basic facilities in often dilapidated social housing/institutions with the aim of restoring some dignity to the already depressed inmates. WWV has also supported the Handicapped Centre in Kandy providing new limbs for amputees.

The most vulnerable are the children and elderly from the marginalised communities like the Tamil tea pluckers (see TEA below). We continue supporting the TEA project by providing a monthly dry rations food programme throughout the year and paying the annual fee of a popular maths teacher (with great results even attracting other local schools to participate!). Some interesting up to date material on this successful project - a viable blueprint that can be established islandwide!

  • We also expanded our collaboration with “Helping Hands” - a small local initiative that has a network of supporters in the community, who can identify genuine food, educational & health needs.

  • Our retail food shop "Rainbow Farm Store” continued to supply provisions for the TEA project and also to the immediate surrounding communities - either free or at least at wholesale prices.

  • Of course, in a “developing economy” there are SO many opportunities to assist where a small sum by western standards makes a huge difference - such as smallscale water supply projects, modest subsidies to individuals facing insurmountable problems (mainly in health & education) and microloans to get small business start ups launched. The list is endless, but I’m sure you get the picture!

  • Our donors are mainly from the groups and individuals who have been inspired by and supported the spreading of WWV’s message worldwide since 1990. Our promise is to deliver the donations we receive direct into the hands of worthy recipients, without third party intrusion and without charging any expenses ourselves. That is VERY rare in the Charity world these days and anyone wishing to donate can do so using various methods of international money transfer. A fund accumulation facility is available and UK and Australia to save the cost of individual bank transfer fees.

  • Why not come and visit the projects you support and combine it with a holiday?! Sri Lanka has recently been receiving many prestigious Travel Awards and is well on the way back to the top of preferred longhaul destinations after all the serious tourism challenges since 2019.
